Preservers

Community

members are invited to become certified volunteer Master Food

Preservers this spring.

Applications

are being accepted by OSU Extension Service now.

The

eight-week training (one day a week) will begin in April. Volunteer

duties include assisting with community food preservation classes and

staffing information tables at farmers markets and community events

throughout the upcoming food preservation season.

OSU

Extension Service and Master Food Preservers also plans to offer a

variety of hands-on food preservation classes during the summer and

fall for community members who want to learn more about food

preservation but do not wish to volunteer.

Extensive

food preservation experience is not required to be Master Food

Preserver. Participants should learn all aspects of food safety and

preservation during the training. A desire to interact with the

public in a cheerful and positive way is more important. There is a

$125 fee for supplies and materials for the training, which will be

held at the Linn County Extension office at their new location, near

the Hwy 99 and Hwy 34 intersection in Tangent. For more information

Museum

open for winter Thursdays

The

East Linn Museum is open Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. during

the winter months.

The

East Linn Museum will celebrate its 40th Anniversary in 2016 with a

variety events: Family Scavenger Hunt, cemetery tours, Lost Arts and

Crafts Fair, hiking the Santiam Wagon Road, local history lectures,

Dollar Railroad Tours, Christmas Carriage Rides, and a Quilt Show.

Square

dance fest

this

weekend

Square

dancers are invited to the 2016 Oregon Mid-Winter Festival Jan. 29-31

at the Linn County Expo Center.

This

year’s theme will be “SWEET 16.” All levels of square dancing,

round dancing and clogging will be offered, along with workshops,

seminars, a sewing clinic, after parties, youth and singles events.

Square

dancers will perform a demonstration from 11 a.m. to noon Friday,

Jan. 29, at the Heritage Mall in Albany. Square dance attire is

required.

The

Grand March and Ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in the

Willamette-A (mainstream) Hall.

Other

times and locations will be listed in the event program book. The

event will also include a vendors hall and resale clothing.

Square

dance caller will be Matt Worley from Virginia; round dance cuers

will be Steve and Irene Bradt from Pennsylvania; and clogging

instructor will be Andy Howard from Florida.

Fees

at the door will be $45 for adults and $25 for youths for the full

three-day festival.

Whole-grain

bread

class

Saturday

OSU

Extension Service Master Food Preservers are offering a hands-on

whole-grain bread baking class using a variety of whole grain flours

locally grown and milled by Camas Country Mill of Junction City.

The

class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m Saturday, Jan. 30, at

the Community of Christ Church, 1485 Gilham St. in Eugene.

The

goal of the class is to explore different varieties of wheat and

their flavors in the context of familiar recipes. Participants will

learn to replace white flour with whole grain flour in a variety of

easy recipes. Students will bake a buttermilk sandwich loaf,

hamburger buns, cinnamon rolls, baguettes and whole wheat crackers.

Each item will feature different whole wheat and high extraction

flours. Lunch will be provided.

Cost

of the class is $65 plus a $20 lab fee. Class size is limited to 12

Diabetes

support

group

at hospital

People

with diabetes or pre-diabetes can learn more about managing their

condition at a free monthly support group at Samaritan Lebanon

Community Hospital.

The

hospital’s Diabetes Education team will host the group on the first

Monday of each month, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the hospital. One of

the team’s educators will lead a lesson, followed by time for any

questions that participants may have.

‘Desdemona’

to be

staged

at OSU

Oregon

State University Theatre will present Paula Vogel’s haunting tale,

“Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief,” on Feb. 4-7.

The

play, a witty drama based on Shakespeare’s “Othello,” will be

performed at 7:30 p.m. from Feb. 4-6, and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 7, in the

OSU Lab Theatre, 2901 S.W. Campus Way, Corvallis.

The

production continues the 2015-16 theater season, “All the World’s

a Stage – Celebrating Shakespeare.”

“Desdemona”

tells the story of three of Shakespeare’s most memorable female

characters while exploring themes of sex, violence, love and trust.

In the play, set on the island of Cyprus, Desdemona, Bianca, and

Emilia share their hopes, frustrations, and fantasies as rivalries

emerge and tender friendships are forged.

Tickets

are $8; $6 for seniors; $5 for students/youths; and $4 for OSU

Woodlands

Feb. 6 at Expo

The

Linn County Chapter of Oregon Small Woodlands Association will hold

its annual Seedling Sale on Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Santiam Building

at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road.

The

sale runs from 8 a.m. to noon, or while supplies last. The seedlings

are fresh from local nurseries and many are Oregon natives.

An

information table will be available to view samples, see pictures and

read information about the seedlings. An Oregon State University

Extension-trained master woodland manager will be present to answer

questions and provide information on which trees are best suited for

a particular planting site.

Local

wood products will be displayed and for sale. Vendors will have

native woods and wood products available for viewing and sale.

Portions

of the money earned will be used to help fund the Linn County

Chapter’s educational programs for youth in Linn County. These

include 4-H and college scholarships.

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the

Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,

Tuesdays and Fridays.The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on

Wednesdays.

First-time

diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested

donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea

upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The

lunch menu on Friday, Jan. 29, is chicken lo mein or beef and black

bean chili, zucchini and red peppers, garden vegetable salad, seven

grain roll and Mandarin pineapple cup.

The

menu for Monday, Feb. 1, is lima beans and ham or spaghetti with

meat sauce, country trio vegetables, broccoli raisin salad, oatmeal

roll and golden fruit cup.

The

menu for Tuesday, Feb. 2, is scalloped potatoes and ham or three

cheese lasagna, cut green beans, spinach Romaine salad, cornmeal roll

and fresh orange.
