Hospital auxilary

seeks volunteers

The Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary is seeking volunteers to help at the Garden Grounds espresso stand, Caring Corner and the other volunteer service areas at Lebanon Samaritan Community Hospital.

Medical training is not required, and all necessary training will be provided. Volunteers must be 15 or older.

The auxiliary has raised tens of thousands of dollars that go back into the hospital, funding hospital departments and clinics.

Farmers Market

open Saturdays

Sweet Home Farmers Market, in the Thriftway parking lot, operates from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

The market offers a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, meat and eggs, locally made bread and other products grown and made by local farmers. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries can spend $6 worth of SNAP benefits and get an extra $6 worth of tokens to use at the market.

Vision support

The Linn County Low Vision Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water St.

Featured speaker will be Marja Byers, herself a visually impaired person. She will speak on how low- vision people can come closer together as a cohesive group in order to impact and educate more people about their challenges.

Byers has recently accepted the position of executive director for Blindskills, an informational and referral source which finds solutions for the challenges of blind and visually impaired people.

Blindskills also publishes “Dialogue,” a free quarterly magazine for sight-limited and blind people.

At each monthly meeting, the group has informative speakers from the medical community, or service providers from government and private organizations, optical equipment providers, and motivational speakers who themselves are either visually impaired or who are blind.

Light refreshments and a door prize drawing are also enjoyed at each meeting

The group meets the third Wednesday of each month. All are welcome to attend.

Psychostock rock fest at Sankey Park

The annual Psychostock music festival will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sankey Park.

Bands who have confirmed attendance include Regulo Jr., a Portland industrial band; The Berated, which includes Pelcher and Patrick Culy, an industrial punk death pop group from Sweet Home; Dead Kingmaker, a metal act; Bury the Goat, a metal group from Lebanon; Jobe Woosley of Sweet Home playing folk rock; Nuclear Salt, a punk act from Salem; Jacquline Ohmer, a singer-guitarist from Sweet Home; and Evergreen, a Sweet Home rock band.

Donations will be accepted for the Sweet Home Auditorium Remodel Committee during the festival. The SHARC project includes repairs and improvements to the Sweet Home High School auditorium. Among them are repairs to the stage, painting, new lighting and a sound system.

Chamber garage

sale this Saturday

Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce will hold a community garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1575 Main St.

The purpose is to raise funds for an ADA-approved ramp at the chamber and Visitors Center building at that location. Cost is $10 per table. Hot dogs, chips and soda will be available for $2.

Linn-Benton Community College is holding its annual tournament at Mallard Creek Golf Course.

The tournament will be Sept. 5 but the entry deadline is Aug. 22.

Free astronomy night at B&G Club

Friends of the Sweet Home Public Library will hold a free evening astronomy program from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club, 880 18th Ave.

Participants will learn about the size and scale of the universe, the stars and other celestial wonders using hands-on activities and assorted visuals with astronomer Kevin Manning.

Manning is an award-winning astronomer who has worked with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray observatory on the space shuttle, and various other observatories.

Crawfordsville

Bridge Day Aug. 24

Crawfordsville will hold its annual Bridge Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24.

The event includes vendors, food and children’s entertainment on the historic bridge at the intersection of Courtney Creek Road and Highway 228, in Crawfordsville.

Citizen’s Academy

deadline Aug. 22

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office will hold a Citizens Academy on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Sept. 9 and concluding on Nov. 18.

The academy will touch on all aspects of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Students will receive approximately 30 hours of training.

Applications are available at Linnsheriff.org under “volunteer programs.” Applications will need to be returned by Friday, Aug. 22.

Space for the academy is limited.

Genealogy expert to speak Sept. 6

The Linn Genealogical Society will hold a seminar on “Shrewd Internet Strategies: Diving Deeper” during its monthly meeting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Guest speaker Peggy Baldwin, a professional genealogist, will address the problems of finding what you are looking for on the Internet, remembering where you found it and keeping track of what you found.

Baldwin is a sixth-generation Oregonian, descending from four lines of Oregon Trail pioneers. She has a master of library science degree and BS in business administration, with a minor in computer science. She frequently speaks about technology-related genealogy topics.

During the break, participants can view a power point presentation to help celebrate the Linn Genealogical Society’s 40th Anniversary.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Aug. 22, is chicken with mole sauce or chili meatballs, either over steamed rice, peas and onions, broccoli ranch slaw and ice cream cup.

The menu for Monday, Aug. 25, is beef mushroom patty or chicken patty with gravy, Delmonico potatoes, country trio vegetables, multigrain bread and zucchini brownie.

The menu for Tuesday, Aug. 26, is white chili with chicken or macaroni and cheese, cut gren beans, tossed salad, oat bran roll and fresh watermelon.
