An RV caught fire near Cascadia State Park Sunday afternoon.
Flames consumed the RV and caused a “total loss” of the vehicle, but firefighters arriving on the scene prevented the blaze from spreading to a residential structure near which the RV was parked, said Sweet Home Fire Department Battalion Chief Randy Whitfield.
At 1:05 p.m. on Jan. 30, two engines from the Cascadia Fire Department responded to a fire in an RV owned by John Luck. The RV was parked at 48089 Highway 20, property owned by Bob Huebler.
Luck stepped out of the RV thinking he had shut off the stove, but he had actually failed to shut off propane tanks in the vehicle, Whitfield said.
Luck heard an explosion and went back into the RV to find that the stove was on fire. One engine from Sweet Home and three water tenders eventually arrived, helping the Cascadia units put out the fire before it spread.
An area resident used a water tank on his flatbed truck in an attempt to knock the flames down before firefighters arrived, Whitfield noted.
The RV was deemed to be a “total loss” according to Whitfield. No injuries were reported in the incident.
