Phone charger blamed for house fire

A fire severely damaged an Airport Lane home Monday morning.

Sweet Home firefighters responded to the fire at 9:37 a.m. at 4591 Airport Lane, located at the intersection of Airport Lane and 46th Avenue.

Fire Chief Dave Barringer said the fire “was pretty much confined to the bedroom” in the southwest corner of the home. The rest of the home sustained smoke and water damage.

Firefighters rescued a dog from the house, Barringer said.

Occupants are Summer Guthrie and Travis Johnson.

It wasn’t a total loss, Barringer said. He roughly estimated the structural damage at $25,000 to $50,000.

Firefighters located the origin of the fire on the floor where a cell phone charger was plugged in although the charger was not plugged into a phone, Barringer said. While firefighters cannot be certain that was the cause of the fire, it is the likely cause of the fire because there was no other ignition source in the room.

“Don’t leave anything plugged in that you’re not using,” Barringer said, at least when it comes to the smaller appliances with smaller cords, with little insulation.

The residents saved their house by having all of the interior doors closed when they left the house, said Battalion Chief Eli Harris. “It confined the fire to the room of origin. It had started to burn through the door, but it didn’t get into any other rooms. It minimized the damage to the other rooms in the house by keeping all the doors closed. It saved the dog’s life too.”

Thirteen firefighters responded to the call with four emergency response vehicles.

Firefighters also responded to a report of a chimney fire at 1338 54th Ave. at 12:28 p.m. Monday

Harris said the owner of the property had cleaned the flue in September or October, but creosote had built up in an area that was difficult to clean.

Firefighters put out the fire, and it didn’t burn anything in the house, Harris said.

While responding to the chimney fire, firefighters and medics responded to a single-vehicle crash just west of Liberty Road on Highway 20 at 12:38 p.m. Further details about the crash were not available at press time.
