A Sweet Home woman has been arrested after allegedly shooting her husband as he slept, according to Sweet Home police.
Chief Jeff Lynn said the Police Department received a report of the incident at approximately 1:39 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18.
When officers responded to the scene, at 1370 Clark Mill Road, they found Mary K. Rochefort, 62, returning to the residence in a vehicle, Lynn said.
Officers also located a 59-year-old man, Ronald Edward Basl, inside the residence. Basl had sustained a gunshot wound, he said. The man was conscious and alert and was eventually transported to a local area hospital by Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District medics.
The injuries sustained by the male were not considered life-threatening, Lynn said. He said Friday that the majority of the case is complete, “the investigation is done.”
He said that investigators found “no information indicating an ongoing threat to the public.”
Rochefort, who reported the shooting, was arrested for first-degree assault and the unlawful use of a firearm. She was lodged at the Linn County Jail, Lynn said.
He said those charges were determined by the District Attorney’s Office.
“A lot of people are asking why she wasn’t charged with attempted murder,” he said. “The DA is the final charging authority. That is what the DA was most comfortable with at the time. They are still weighing their options, I’ve been told. They will determine what the charge is, moving forward.”
At a Dec. 19 arraignment, Judge Rachel Kittson set bail for Rochefort at $300,000. A hearing on her case is scheduled for Jan. 6 before Judge David Delsman.
The investigation is on-going and anyone with information is asked to call the Sweet Home Police Department Detective Keenan Martin at (541) 367-5181.
