Oregon’s history on wheels, the Oregon Historical society’s Van of History, will roll into Sweet Home Friday, and open its doors at 10 a.m. to give the public a glimpse of the state’s past.

The van will be located across the street from the High School, and will be open most of the day on Friday and Saturday. All the schools within the Union High School district have received an invitation from Mayor William Penny to bring the students to see the historical display.

The public is also invited to attend, as the purpose of the van is to publicize Oregon’s history and the centennial to Oregonians.

The home of Orva Lynch, about a half a mile east of Waterloo, was destroyed by fire of undetermined origin Wednesday night.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynch and their four children were visiting friends at Lacomb when the fire started around 1:30 p.m.

Lebanon Fire Chief Paul Robertson estimated the total loss to be at about $6,500, $3,500 for the house, and $3,000 for the contents. Only the house was insured.

Cause of the fire was thought to be from a short in a TV set, but it was not determined. Firemen were handicapped by a lack of water.

White’s Electronics owner Ken White thanked over 80 of his employees at a reception in their honor Friday afternoon for their efforts on the development of the company’s new metal detector, the 6000 Di S3.

Manufacturing manager Bill Colson thanked the group for their part “in making this a super instrument.”

When asked about future plans, White said, “We’re at the very top in technology. We’ll have to develop some new technology now.”

The new metal detector is the top of the line. The new detector features trigger switching for ease of operation, a large meter on the handle, a self-adjusting threshhold and a new ground adjustment that affects the detector’s sensitivity to ground mineralization.

White said that the celebration was because no product is really the result of one person, but a team effort, and the success of the new instrument is because of that teamwork.

The shed in back of Economy Wholesale, 28822 Weatherly Lane, was destroyed by fire Saturday, according to Sweet Home fire marshal Keith Gabriel.

The fire was caused as sparks from welding got into the sawdust and smoldered for about 18 hours before detection.
