Marriage made on wheels

A local couple walked away from a local motocross track Saturday with a different kind of trophy – a wedding certificate.

David Germain, 36, and Kim Schaffer, 28, were married at the Albany Motor Sports Park in a tower overlooking the track on Saturday.

The course was probably the most fitting place for a wedding between a former professional motocross racer and a mechanic.

Immediately following the ceremony, the newlywed Germains, wearing tux and wedding dress, took a trophy ride around the track. They were joined by many of their friends.

“She’s the coolest chick in the whole world,” said David of his new wife. “She’s like, ‘No, to a wedding hall.'”

Kim also rides bikes and is a mechanic.

The two met at the Albany track when David raced with Kim’s brother, Gerritt Schaffer, and father, Dan Schaffer.

“We both ride and race,” he said. “Both families ride and race, our whole lives.”

Kim said she had a crush on David for a long time before they got together.

“He was one of the fast guys out here when I was younger,” she said. “He had a girlfriend. That was my only problem.”

One day, her dad called her at work, a bike shop, and suggested she come to the track and practice. David just happened to be out practicing too and started talking with Kim and her Dad.

Later, “he called me and asked me out,” she said.

That was Sept. 2, 2005. About one year later they were at a race track getting married.

“This is where we originally met,” she said. “This is where we started dating. We thought it’d be fun to come out and ride instead of sitting in a wedding hall.”

David has been riding since he was 3 and started racing when he was 10. He went pro at 18, riding in American Motorcycle Association supercross and outdoor.

He also plays guitar and is front man for David G and the Blue Souls. His father played guitar and taught him to play. His sister, Joy, took him to his first concert, a Stevie Ray Vaughn show. From there on out, he has been playing rock ‘n’ roll and blues.

David is the son of Jo and Fred Germain of Sweet Home He is a former Sweet Home resident. He grew up in the San Diego area and graduated from Orange Glen High School in Escondido. He works at ATS Systems in Corvallis as a painter.

Kim is the daughter of Dan and Andria Schaffer. She grew up in the Sweet Home area. She completed her education at Motorcycle Mechanical Institute.

Best man was Mike Ames, a friend of the groom. Maid of honor was the groom’s sister, Joy Germain.

Judge Richard Triska officiated the ceremony.

A reception followed at the park with lunch provided by Jan McDonald and live music, including David and his band, followed by more motocross.
