Traffic Safety considers four-way

The intersection at 22nd Avenue and Long Street may get a four-way stop sign soon.

The Traffic Safety Committee considered a request for a four-way stop there after a resident, Mike Comstock, petitioned the council last month, citing a high number of accidents. Other neighbors have also told The New Era at accident scenes about the problem with accidents there.

The committee asked the police to further research safety issues at the intersection. The committee meets again in July.

The intersection has had three reported accidents so far this year. The nearby intersection at 18th and Long, a four-way stop, has had one. To the east, at 23rd and Long, a two-way stop, there have been no reported accidents.

The city has looked at the intersection before, police Commander Steve Young said, but before, the city has not had the additional information about unreported accidents there.

Comstock reported three or four accidents since he and his family moved in on the corner of 22nd and Long in February. Beyond that, members of his family have seen seven or eight near misses. The problem is that drivers on 22nd sometimes think it is a four-way stop.

The Traffic Safety Committee will consider information about the intersection further before making a possible recommendation to the City Council for action.
