Jan. 10, 1930 – March 12, 2018
After a courageous four-year battle with cancer, Beverly Jean Schafer succumbed March 12, 2018 in Portland to join her heavenly family, having enjoyed 88 years of life on earth and not wanting to leave, with family at her side.
Beverly was born Jan. 10, 1930 in Lebanon to Harold V. and Emma M. (Cooper) Powell. She was a descendent of Oregon pioneer and logging families.
Ancestors include the Coop-er-Perry families, who settled and lived in the Sweet Home area with property claims in Pleasant Valley on Cooper Hill, and the Powell-Shepherd families, which settled in and near Dallas.
Beverly moved to Prineville around 1945, where she later met and married fellow race car driver Roy Alfred Baxter in June, 1952. They both raced stock cars and won at the Prineville Race Track.
They moved to Sweet Home and had two children: Lance Baxter and Mary Walker (Brian) of Portland.
Roy’s parents, Jesse James Baxter and Alice Victoria (Davis) Baxter, lived with them for many years.
Beverly and Roy divorced. Beverly married Alvin Benjamin Schafer of Portland.
This marriage produced two sons, Richard Silverman (Traci) of Portland, and Terry Silverman (Ginger) of Arizona.
Beverly had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved all and was loved by all.
A stranger was only a friend she hadn’t met.
Funeral services were held March 26, 2018, with interment at Willamette National Cemetery.
