June 30, 1921 – Aug. 18, 2016
Mollie Etta Andrews, 95, of Sweet Home, died Aug, 18, 2016 at her home.
She was born June 30, 1921 in Bend. She grew up in the Fort Rock area. She married Francis Andrews and they moved to Dallas before coming to Sweet Home in 1942, when the town was bustling, providing wood for World War II.
They raised two children, who graduated from Sweet Home High School. Mrs. Andrews was a faithful Husky sports fan.
She started working for LaRue’s Bakery in 1954. In 1962 she purchased the bakery and for more than 42 years, she owned and operated Mollie’s Bakery on Main Street, serving up pancakes as big as a Volkswagen tire and hearty hot biscuits slathered with homemade gravy. And there were, of course, cakes and doughnuts that sold out daily.
She was once quoted as saying, “I love people, living in Sweet Home, owning the bakery and helping at the Senior Center. It’s been a great blessing to me.” The Andrewses operated the shop together until 1986, when Mr. Andrews passed away.
Mrs. Andrews sold the bakery in 2006. She became very active in the Senior Center, soon becoming a board member and treasurer. She loved playing cards, especially pinochle, and putting together puzzles.
Despite 12-hour work days, she found time for painting. Many of her Western- and Native American-themed paintings could be seen on the walls of the bakery and senior center. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves and Ducks football fan.
Mrs. Andrews is survived by her daughter, Dolores Glover of Santee, Calif.; son Roderick and daughter-in-law Carol Andrews of Sweet Home; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis and sister Rose.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Sweet Home High School Husky Field. Per Mrs. Andrews’ request, please come dressed in sports attire, preferably in Husky, Ducks or Braves gear. Alex Paul is allowed to wear Yankee attire.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
