Aug. 18, 1922 – March 31, 2015
Orville Everett Nichol, 92, of Sweet Home died March 31, 2015 from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
He was born Aug. 18, 1922 in Logan, Kan. to James & Grace (Booth) Nichol, and grew up during the Dust Bowl, which contributed to his later health complications.
Mr. Nichol worked in Civilian Conservation Corps camps instead of enlisting because he was the last son at home to ensure the Nichol name.
He loved gospel and country music, which gave him many hours of entertainment.
Although having only finished the eighth grade, he was a great carpenter, remodeling his home as well as many other homes in the area.
Mr. Nichol was the cornerstone of his family, raising six children while working usually two jobs (one as a mill worker and the other as a millwright). His friends at work always called him Nick.
He is survived by his children, Diana Eberhard and son-in-law Ken of Elgin, Orviletta James and son-in-law J.C. of Sweet Home, Pam Severns and son-in-law Greg of Sweet Home, Michelle Graham of Sweet Home, Jim Nichol and daughter-in-law Carol of Sweet Home, and daughter-in-law Carol, also of Sweet Home, who is the widow of the late Michael Nichol; niece Judy Smith and husband Jerry of April Crossing, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He would have met his first great-great grandson in July.
Mt. Nichol was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lucille Nichol; and his first son, Michael Eugene Nichol.
Services are planned for May 22, 2015.
Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements. For updated information, visit sweethomefuneral.com.
