May 8, 1927 – July 9, 2014
Dorothy Lucille Nichol, 87, of Sweet Home passed away Wednesday, July 9, in her home of congenital heart failure surrounded by many members of her family.
She was born in Speed, Kan., to Harold Julious and Violet (Lesty) Seeger. She was one of twelve children.
She lived in the years of make do, make out or do without. She learned to make do with very little when she was young which followed through with a life of careful conservation. She was one of the first recyclers.
Although Dorothy only went through the eighth grade she was very intelligent and wrote wonderful poems. She got to experience school through helping her children with homework, making adding, subtracting and multiplying fun while doing the supper dishes.
She raised not only six kids, but had a hand in raising grandkids and great-grandkids. She never worked outside of her home but made herself available for her husband, kids, grandkids and a multitude of neighbor kids. Her grandkids say she made some of the best after school milkshakes ever. You would never hear her say a bad thing about any of her grandkids. She loved and supported us through all experiences good and bad.
Dorothy was known for her excellent pickles, fried chicken, onion rings, donuts and homemade candy. If you asked for an orange it was given sliced. Her popcorn balls on Halloween were always a treat. Grandpa always said the only thing wrong with her homemade bread was that it didn’t last long enough.
She could always be found in the summer tending her beautiful flowers. God speed mom. We will miss you so much.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 69 years Orville Everett Nichol; five children: Diana and her husband Ken Eberhard of Elgin, Orviletta and her husband J.C. James, Pamela and her husband Greg Severns, Michelle Graham, Jim and his wife Carol Nichol, all of Sweet Home; daughter-in-law Carol (surviving spouse of Dorothy’s oldest son Michael) who is a very special and an important part of our family living in Sweet Home; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren with two more on the way; sister Dona Gibbs-Olsen and her husband Willie Olsen of Colorado; two brothers: Manley Seeger of Colorado, Larry Seeger of Kansas.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Gilliland Cemetery. Her grandson Dustin Nichol will be officiating. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
