Richard Norman Duncan

Richard Norman (Dick) Duncan passed away Feb. 10, 2013 after a brief illness.

Born in Roseburg in 1932, Dick grew up in the Lebanon area, graduating from Oregon State University with a degree in game management. He spent two years in the Army as an officer in the Mountain and Cold Weather Training Command and several years as a Captain in the National Guard.

His 30-year career in government service continued with the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and the Corp of Engineers until his retirement in 1989 as the Chief Biologist for the Portland District Corp of Engineers.

He married Joane Williams in 1954. They lived in Georgia and Colorado before settling in the Northwest to raise two sons. He was a longtime resident of Damascus.

Dick earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was involved for many years as a Scoutmaster; teaching scouts the way to survive in the wilderness that he loved. He spent much of his time in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, skiing, and hiking. He led many trips to the top of the mountain peaks of Oregon and Washington.

After his retirement he pursued a second career, manufacturing carding machines and accessories for the natural fibers community.

He is survived by his wife Joane,; son Erik Duncan and wife Debbie of Sweet Home; son Scott Duncan and wife Shelley of Beaver Creek; grandson Jason and wife Misty, grandson Derek, granddaughters Ginger and Theresa, and great-granddaughters Madison and Ashley.
