Elmer Carpenter

Elmer “Mal” Carpenter, 90, of Lebanon died Dec. 22, 2011 at his daughter’s home near Lacomb.

He was born Jan. 10, 1921 near Ozark, Ark., the son of Elmer and Susie (Anderson) Carpenter. He grew up and attended school near Roseville, where he also worked on his family farm. At the age of 16, he began working in the coal mines and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to California during the early 1940s and lived in Ventura County until 1970, when he moved to Lincoln City. He then moved to Sweet Home in 1974. He has lived in Lebanon for the past four years.

Mr. Carpenter enjoyed traveling to visit family members in California and Arkansas. He has served in the Masonic Lodge and the Boy Scouts of America in California, and attended the Lacomb Baptist Church.

He married Mary Kimberling in Paris, Arkansas on Oct. 18, 1941.

He is survived by a daughter, Marilyn and son-in-law Craig Still of Lebanon; son Ronald and daughter-in-law Jane Carpenter of Hartman, Ark.; brother Orvene Carpenter of Port Hueneme, Calif.; two sisters, Viola Baker of Yorba Linda, Calif. and Lucille Spicer of Elverta, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 2000, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home, with private burial in Lacomb Cemetery.
