Money speaking louder than law

Editor:

Regarding your front-page article (Aug. 22) on how out of control the production and distribution of marijuana in the State of Oregon is, how legality is not the issue. Enforcement of legal laws is.

Dr. Wolthuis, in a (Aug. 22) letter to the editor, states that the Planning Commission is answering to the legality of what they were considering.

The fact is the State of Oregon is operating illegally, according to the United States government.

Our United States government has never declared the manufacture, distribution or marijuana is legal. However, the enforcement of that disobedience has never been followed through. Expedience is not priority; funding is.

Just because a governing body can fight each other in meetings does not make their decisions legal. It means only that due to financial needs an agreement has been met.

As an operator of a class 8 tractor (commonly referred to as an 18-wheeler), for over 40 years, I can testify that driving laws are frequently ignored, because individuals can. That makes them legal?

When money becomes the basis for a law does that make it legal?
