Drivers ignoring crosswalk law

Editor:

Last week at midday I was traveling down Long Street in front of the high school on my bike. A young woman was waiting in the crosswalk in front of the school as I approached. I stopped for her but unfortunately, the vehicle that was well behind me at the time chose not to stop. She thanked me for waiting to which I replied that the vehicle really should have stopped too. She said, “Well it is Sweet Home after all.”

I found her reply to be very disheartening, especially since this was hardly the first time I’ve seen this happen. Do we really want to create such low expectations in our youth? Are we really in that much of a hurry in a town that is only 15 minutes from one end to the other?

Granted some youth will slowly saunter across Long Street but I’ve observed cars speeding past the crosswalk in front of the Post Office too as pedestrians waited to cross. I think that the world throws enough stress into our lives right now that showing this kind of disregard for our neighbors, young and old, is unwarranted at best and can be dangerous, especially in a school zone. Please think about slowing down and being watchful as you drive.
