Police help everyone

Editor:

In response to Ms. Lawrence’s most recent tirade (Jan. 10) about not being appointed to a City Council Committee, good for the City Council!

I expect the council to appoint positive-thinking, problem solvers to represent us. Whereas, Ms. Lawrence is the most negative, counterproductive and derisive person to grace this city in years. She appears to enjoy creating problems, not solving them.

As for her apparent fixation with Councilman Gourley’s dog, I say get over it! She suggested that we look at the police incident report for a “good laugh.” Well, I took her up on it. In a nutshell, here’s what it said: A police officer was patrolling a residential neighborhood. He was flagged down by a citizen, Jim Gourley, and was asked if he had seen a missing dog. The officer continued his patrols and about six blocks away, this time right across the street from Mr. Gourley’s house, he was flagged down by another citizen, Larry Hinton Sr., Gourley’s neighbor. Mr. Hinton said he had Mr. Gourley’s dog locked in his backyard. The officer facilitated the return of the dog and submitted the details of the incident to Linn County Dog Control per Mr. Hinton’s request.

So let’s review. An officer patrolling neighborhoods assists two separate citizens who had asked for help. Both were helped and treated equally and the Linn County Dog Control was notified in case any county animal ordinances were violated by Mr. Gourley. How dare the police act in this way!

Ms. Lawrence keeps claiming to represent anonymous, downtrodden, individuals who apparently cannot speak for themselves. I know for a fact that the Sweet Home Police Department responds to all reasonable requests for assistance, no matter who you are. Could it be that the problems Ms. Lawrence keeps alluding to are not important enough for the citizens to call in themselves? If they have, the city will have a record.

Again, kudos to the City Council and kudos to our police officers!
