Editor:
A letter in the Oct. 17 paper extolled the virtues of government protection though regulative oversight of industry.
That deregulation of airlines resulted in upheaval and the end to some airlines. I question the writer’s conclusion and proffer another. That deregulation allowed a facade of healthy business to be removed.
Unhealthy businesses were being bolstered by a false wall of protection from the ramifications of poor decisions and failure to innovate.
This wall, government regulation, was erected by political cronies, unions and likely under the table payments to prevent the exercise of free enterprise and marketplace competition from showing what was dramatically brought to light when the facade was removed.
That seemingly intelligent people fail to understand this is bad enough. But that we are allowing our government to continue this practice in today’s market is beyond belief.
We have allowed our government to draw us into $16,206,561,248,675.79 (16 trillion dollars) of debt through distribution of so called stimulus money to a select number of businesses. GM is probably the worst.
You cry, “Oh, we can’t let GM go bankrupt. Why, think of all the jobs saved.”
In truth, you should be asking why we are paying overpriced workers to make inferior products just so their union bosses can continue to reap ill-gotten gains from the oppressed workers they allow no choice but to pay the ransom euphemistically called “dues.”
Then we send billions to Solyndra just so they can die another day after providing no significant advancement in solar technology and our search to inexpensive alternative energy.
Oh, excuse me. The search was for alternative energy. Our president has made it abundantly clear it won’t be inexpensive. Feeling the love yet?
How about the $240 million in stimulus paid to the Massachusetts battery maker, that is going bust again but is able to avoid bankruptcy by the largess of a Chinese billionaire who may well move the whole thing overseas.
Aren’t you proud we have given China this company where they can place a sign telling how they will kill all Japanese similar to the sign found in front of the Audi dealership? Fits well with the liberal agenda, doesn’t it?
President Reagan stated that government’s view of the economy is, “If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. If it stops moving, subsidize it.”
This isn’t “Weekend at Bernie’s,” folks. It does no good to walk the dead corporate body around from party to party. It is dead and needs to be buried. Capitalism works if government keeps out of its way.
Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Think about that when you make the check mark that will elect the next president. Are you voting for four more years of stimulus, paid to their pet projects, supported by the printing presses of the Federal Reserve and with the bill placed directly on the back of your children and grandchildren? And for what? Because you believe you will get womb to tomb healthcare free?
If so, call me. I have lakefront property in Death Valley that has your name written all over it.
