Editor:
In this age of political cynicism and citizen apathy, it is no surprise that voter participation remains low. However, The New Era’s admirable coverage of local elections and ballot measures will help to encourage even the most skeptical among us to exercise our sovereign right to vote. The staff is to be commended for their valuable efforts to inform voters before they mail in their ballots.
Now it is up to us. Each citizen should take this responsibility seriously since every election determines the relative progress of society as a whole. You may criticize your government or its policies but the fact remains that we the people are the government, and we get what we deserve by virtue of our right to vote. Not voting effectively nullifies your voice, and you forfeit your right to complain by mere default.
So if you value free speech, civil rights and human liberties, fill out your ballots and mail it in or put it in the nearest drop box. The New Era has done its job by informing you. Don’t let their work be in vain.
One thing more before I close: Libraries are full of books, and books are full of knowledge, which leads to wisdom. Vote yes on Measure 22-61, the library levy. Posterity was never more affordable nor has it ever been more essential.
