Sweet Home’s softball team played twice last week, beating Santiam Christian 8-3 at home and then downing Cascade 5-2 on the road.
Coach Karyn Hartsook said that although the games are technically scrimmages, since Sweet Home is winding down its six-week spring “mini” season, players are taking them seriously.
“I feel like the kids are coming and working hard,” she said. “They’re coachable. All of the kids are either knocking rust off or their gaining new skills, improving.”
Against Cascade, the Huskies faced a 4A-level varsity pitcher.
“We had some kids, for whom it was their first time playing, who got legitimate based hits,” she said. “That’s promising for the future.”
Savannah Hutchins pitched the entire game for Sweet Home, notching the win.
On Tuesday and Thursday of this week, the Huskies are hosting Harrisburg at 4 p.m. both days.
“Things are coming along, it’s good,” Hartsook said. “We just haven’t seen the kids for so long, it’s so exciting. At least we’re getting some games.”
