Boys fall to Stayton in soccer, aiming for a win in final three games

Sweet Home lost 10-0 to Stayton in boys soccer on the road Oct. 15.

“We actually started a lot better than we have in the past,” said Coach Eric Stutzer. Stayton didn’t score during the first five minutes, which is something that has happened frequently this season.

The Huskies immediately put offensive pressure on Stayton, Stutzer, with about 10 quality shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. All of them were blocked by good defensive play by the Eagles.

That edge started crumbling after a shot when Stayton countered, Stutzer said. “Then we had the same old story.”

The midfield wings didn’t track their players, and Stayton scored, Stutzer said.

Stayton is ranked fifth in the state right now, Stutzer said, so it was impressive to have that kind of pressure on the Eagles that early in the game.

Stayton followed up with three back-to-back goals, and that kind of shut the Huskies down, Stutzer said. Stayton put away three more goals to lead 7-0 at halftime.

“We competed way better in the second half,” Stutzer said, and were playing fairly decently at the end of the game.

Communication was better last week, Stutzer said, and now the players need to “leep their heads in it and not have the emotional response after bring scored on.

“We had some decent improvement, but we still have a long way to go.”

Preparing for their final three games, the Huskies have been working on communication and midfield play, Stutzer said. They’re working on building an attack out of the back to set up advantageous play at forward.

The Huskies were scheduled to travel to Cascade Tuesday evening. They will host Sisters at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

“If we come out with offensive pressure, I think we have a chance there,” Stutzer said. They just need to sustain it when they are under heavy pressure.

The Huskies will end their season hosting Newport at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.
