Girls tie Cascade in soccer, fall to Outlaws’ last-minute goal

Sweet Home tied Cascade 0-0 at home Sept. 18 in girls soccer before losing a game in the last seconds 1-0 at Sisters Thursday.

“This was actually one of our best games,” said Coach Ramiro Santana about the Cascade match. “We’re starting to do things better than how we started. The girls are playing much better.”

The team is putting all of its pieces together, and the girls are getting better, he said. They watched film from the previous game for the first time before playing against Cascade, and they were able to make some adjustments.

Both teams had a number of close calls throughout the game.

Kate Hawken took a couple of close shots on goal that went over the posts, and Sydney Mauer took a shot that hit one of the posts, Santana said. Cascade had 23 shots on the game, while Sweet Home had 19.

Cascade had a fast forward, Santana said, but he double-teamed her with Emily Farthing and Esther Ramsey, who did a good job shutting her down when she had the ball.

Santana said the Huskies had to do it again with Sisters with Mauer and Madelyn Neuschwander taking on a six-footer who could shoot from the middle of the field.

The Huskies almost had a second tie game, Santana said, but in a physical game, the Outlaws were able to force in a shot in the last minute of the contest.

“We made some great shots, and were close,” Santana said. “It just didn’t happen for us.”

The Huskies were scheduled to travel to Newport Tuesday. They’ll host Woodburn at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and travel to Philomath next Tuesday.
