Golfers look like solid third if they play their game

Going into their only home tournament of the season for both the boys and girls, Sweet Home’s golfers were standing a solid third on both sides with the district tournaments approaching on May 7-8.

“We’re right in it,” said Coach Pat Davis as the Huskies prepared to host at Mallard Creek Golf Club Tuesday, April 24. (The event took place after The New Era went to press.)

“The girls are kind of in the same boat the boys are. If both play to their potential, both can go to state. That would be pretty cool.”

Sweet Home’s girls played Monday at the District Prelude tournament at Santiam Golf Club in Stayton, but results were unavailable.

Last week, though, at Chinook Winds in Lincoln City on April 19, Haley May shot an 85 and the Huskies actually had four varsity golfers so they could qualify as a team: Nicole Grady, who shot 105; Rebekah Fassler, who shot 108, and Lexi Schilling, in her first match of the season after knee surgery, finishing with a 151.

Davis said he expected their team finish to be lower if Brook Womack had been able to play, but she was unable to compete due to another commitment.

On the boys side, the Huskies played at Agate Beach in Newport April 18.

Senior Seth Wright didn’t complete the round, which eliminated the Huskies from the team competition, but senior Zak Fox carded a 95 as a junior varsity player, one shot lower than his previous outing.

Davis said he’s delighted to see depth starting to emerge for his team.

“We would have beaten North Marion by 8 strokes if we had been able to use Zak’s score,” he said.

Jake Hindmarsh led the boys with an 80, good for third place overall, while Braden Keesee finished with and 86. Christopher May shot a 106 and Carson Smith rounded things out with a 118 after going 44 on the front nine, then following that up with a 74 on the back.
