Devon Dixon finished in second place Aug. 20 at the Woodburn Drag Strip to win the season high school championship.
He will move on to the Division 6 finals at Woodburn next weekend.
In the first elimination, on Aug. 20, he dialed in a time of 13.72 and ran a 13.88 to eliminate Austin Varner of Astoria, who was second in points for the season. Varner dialed a 12.42 and ran a 12.55, which would have given him the win by .03 seconds, but he pulled a red light, starting too soon off the line.
The win gave Dixon a lock on first place for the season.
In the finals, Dixon said, he wasn’t worried about winning the race.
“I just wanted to shoot for that perfect light.”
He had a reaction time of .001 seconds after dialing in at 13.87. He broke out with a time of 13.78, while his opponent dialed 11.97 and ran 12.02 for the win.
After the high school eliminations, Dixon ran 12 passes trying to hit the perfect light. The closest he came in the series was .001 red light. His best run was 13.84. His 1955 Chevrolet pickup’s best time is 13.68.
