Huskies beat Sisters in baseball for first time in years

Sweet Home came from behind last week to take down the Sisters Outlaws in baseball for the first time in at least six years.

The Huskies beat the Outlaws 10-9 on April 26 at home. In their previous meeting, Sisters beat Sweet Home 11-1 in five innings under the 10-run rule.

“We had a great come-from-behind win tonight after being down 9-4,” said Coach Dan Tow. “Our kids really battled and put together a big sixth inning to score six runs and take the lead.”

Tow wasn’t sure when Sweet Home last defeated Sisters, but he believes it has been at least six years.

“In the seventh, we had two outstanding defensive plays by Desmond Ely and Justin Tow to preserve the victory. The defensive plays in the seventh inning were two of the better plays we’ve had all year; and under the circumstances, they were just really big. Sisters had guys in scoring position, and we had to make those plays to keep the lead and get the win.”

Sisters took a 3-0 lead out of the gate. The Huskies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 3-2. The Outlaws scored again in the second inning, but Sweet Home brought two runners home to tie the game 4-4. Sisters built its 9-4 lead with two runs in the fourth inning and three in the sixth.

“We had numerous big hits in the game, including a two-run home run by Brandon Keenon, a two-RBI double by Jake Long, and a two-RBI single by Justin Tow,” Tow said.

In addition, Keenon, Long and Austin James each had two hits. Danny Virtue added a big RBI single in the sixth inning, and Kobe Olson drove in the winning run, scoring Brandon Keenon in the sixth inning.

Virtue threw the first four innings, and Brandon Keenon the last three.

Virtue gave up seven hits, two walks and six earned runs. He struck out five. Keenon gave up six hits, four walks and three earned runs. He struck out one.

The game left Sweet Home tied with Sisters for third place at 4-5 in league play, though the Outlaws moved ahead to 5-5 with a 4-3 win over Elmira on Friday. Sweet Home is 10-7 overall. Sisters is 8-9.

Going into this week, Cottage Grove led the league with an 8-2 record, and Elmira is second with a record of 7-3.
