Huskies make short work of Sisters, Sutherlin in softball

Sweet Home crushed Sisters and Sutherlin last week in softball.

The Huskies beat at Sutherlin 16-1 on Thursday, April 28, and Sisters 17-0 twice, all of them in five innings under the 10-run rule, at home on April 26.

Sweet Home started scoring early at Sutherlin, taking a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Makenna Melbye in the first and quickly expanding the lead by five in the second inning.

Sutherlin scored a run in the third, but the Huskies scored five in the fifth inning to put the game away.

The Huskies collected 11 hits on the day, with Melbye leading the way. She went 3-3, including the home run, and accounted for five RBIs and three runs.

Sarita Zanona had two hits and two runs. Hitting once each were Madi Barringer, with a run; Ally Tow, with a double, two runs and two RBIs; Sunhee Bittter, with two runs; Kennedi Waldrop, with an RBI and a run; Sydney Mauer, with an RBI and a run; and Kylie Armstrong, with two RBIs. Britney Zook added an RBI and two runs. Brianna Hoffman scored one run.

Hoffman gave up two hits and one unearned run, pitching all five innings. She struck out nine from Sutherlin.

For Sutherlin, K. Brewer gave up 10 hits, seven walks and 15 runs, nine of them earned. She struck out one Huskies batter. A relief pitcher threw one out, giving up a hit, a walk and a run.

The Huskies are 8-2 in league and in second place, one game behind Elmira, 9-1. Junction City is in third place with a record of 5-4.

The Huskies were scheduled this week to host Sutherlin Monday and Cottage Grove on Wednesday. They travel to Cottage Grove on Friday. Next week, they finish the regular season with two outings against Junction City.

Tow and Hoffman each gave up one hit and no walks against the Sisters Outlaws in two games, held in Sweet Home on April 26.

The Huskies were counted as the visiting team in the first game.

They jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. In the ninth, they exploded from the plate to score nine runs and and seal their win.

Sweet Home had seven hits on the game. They came from Zook, with an RBI and two runs; Zanona, with an RBI and a run; Barringer, with two runs; Melbye with an RBI and three runs; Hoffman, with an RBI and a run; Mauer with an RBI and a run; and Armstrong, with three RBIs and a run. Tow had an RBI and two runs. Marissa Kurtz scored three runs, and Waldrop had one run.

Hoffman gave up just one hit and no walks and struck out nine batters.

For Sisters, A. Smith, gave up 11 walks and 17 runs, eight of them earned. She struck out three Huskies.

In the second game, Zook went 3-3 to lead Huskies at the plate with two RBIs and three runs.

The Huskies scored all 17 of their runs in the first three innings, 10 of them in the second.

They had 13 hits. Tow collected three hits, with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Collecting two hits each were Zanona, with an RBI and three runs; Barringer, with a triple, an RBI and a run; and Melbye, with two RBIs and two runs. Bitter hit once, with an RBI and two runs. Mauer had an RBI and two runs. Armstrong and Waldrop also scored one run each.

In the circle, Tow gave up one a single hit and no walks and struck out seven batters.

For Sisters, Smith gave up four walks and 17 runs, four of them earned. She struck out two Huskies.
