Golfers follow second-place finish with win at home tournament

After a miserable tournament on their home course two weeks ago, Sweet Home’s golfers bounced back in a big way, taking second in a tournament at Quail Run in La Pine on April 30, then winning their first tournament of the year at home Monday, May 5.

“We’re really playing well right now,” Coach Pat Davis said. “The kids are shooting good golf, just really consistent good golf.”

At Quail Run, the Huskies finished second to Seaside by two strokes, 238-240. Michael Tolle led the team with a lifetime-best 77 in high school competition to finish second. Steven Bishop shot 80 and Christ Melcher was third for the Huskies with an 89. Bryce Daniels rounded out the team scoring with a 91. Their fifth man, Brenner Roberts, finished with 94.

Davis sent three of his JV team to Middlefield in Cottage Grove Friday, May 2, as a “qualifier” for the home tournament on Monday, May 5.

Timmy Glascow shot 53, “by far the best score of the year,” Davis said, but then Montana Baxter came in with a 52, followed by Tyler Plebuch with a 51, which got him the sixth spot in the scramble tournament on Monday.

“At the beginning of the year, Tyler shot over 100 on a very similar course,” Davis noted. “All three of those guys are vastly improved from where they’ve been. Those were great JV scores.”

On Monday, Davis mixed things up for the teams at the Mallard Creek tournament, as golfers were paired and played best shot.

Tolle and Daniels were on top of the board, finishing with a two-under 70, with Bishop and Melcher finishing in second overall with a one-over 73. Roberts and Pelbuch shot 93 together.

“The boys played well,” Davis said. “It was exciting.”

Wednesday, May 7, the varsity will play at Tokatee on the McKenzie River in the Robinson Memorial, which will be a tune-up for the district tournament on Monday and Tuesday, May 11-12, on the same course.
