Sweet Home’s golfers are three tournaments into their season and, once they find their stride, Coach Pat Davis is expecting them to figure out what they can do.
The key will be to actually get a full team onto the course.
Thus far, the Huskies have been at least one golfer short of the allowed five varsity players in each outing.
“It would be nice to have five guys in the same place, at the same time,” Davis said.
On Monday, April 14, Sweet Home had three golfers on the course at Shadow Hills in Junction City, thanks to some school conflicts.
Steven Bishop led the team with an 87, after a bad back nine in which he struggled on the greens.
“Steven’s still struggling with his putter,” Davis said.
Chris Melcher had a 100 and Brenner Roberts, whose scores have improved with each outing, shot 103.
Since they didn’t have four players, the Huskies couldn’t score as a team, but Davis said they would have finished in the top five of a 10-team field if they’d had enough scorers.
“The kids played OK today but they did not play great,” Davis said. “But it’s a fantastic course, a tough, tough course.”
On Tuesday, April 15, Sweet Home finished tied for third with Junction City at 375 behind Oakridge and Cottage Grove in an eight-team field.
Bishop led the team with an 82 at Diamond Woods, also in the Junction City area, followed by Michael Tolle with 87. Bryce Daniels had a 97 and Roberts finished with 109.
The Huskies will play at Creswell Wednesday, April 16, and then will play Monday at Old McDonald in Bandon after a warm-up round Sunday.
The junior varsity team played last week at Springfield Country Club and Davis said their scores “improved quite a bit from their first meet. There wasn’t anybody who stood out, but for two guys it was their first meet and I was impressed by how well they handled that.”
The JV team will play Friday, April 18, at Oakridge’s Circle Bar course.
