The Huskies defeated Crook County 3-0 Saturday at home in girls soccer after losing 7-1 at Sisters on Thursday and 2-1 in overtime at home against Junction City on Oct. 1.
“We corrected ourselves,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “We could’ve done even better than that. We dominated that game. We decided to be aggressive. We decided to get the speed out of the goalie (Haley Kent).”
She’s the fastest girl in the high school, he said, and the team let her loose from the goal to score the first goal of the day against Crook County, followed by another on a penalty kick from Allison Wickline. Ashley Wickline scored the third goal.
The key was speed with good kicking, Santana said. “The only way they could stop us was by knocking my girls down.”
The Huskies scored first against Junction City with a straight long shot up the middle by Ashley Wickline. The ball slipped by the defending goalkeeper to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead with about three minutes left in the first half.
Junction City responded a couple of minutes later with a shot over Kent’s head to tie the game 1-1 at halftime. The game reached overtime, two 10-minute halves. Junction City scored the game-winning goal in the first half.
The Huskies had their chances, Ashley Wickline with a header and Auna Davis with a couple of close shots.
Against Sisters, the Huskies trailed 2-0 at halftime, Santana said. They were holding their own against the Outlaws, but Courtney Kent, a key defender, was hurt and had to leave the game.
After that, Sisters developed a big scoring advantage.
Jessica Hoover scored for the Huskies against Sisters.
“We’re still good,” Santana said. “We played the best.”
Junction City managed to get the win in overtime, Santana said. “I think we can beat them. It goes both ways. We had our chances. We played tough.
“We stayed with them. The girls played amazing. Everyone we play, we’re looking good.”
The Huskies have one win, two ties and four losses. They were scheduled to host La Pine on Tuesday and travel to La Pine on Wednesday.
