Huskies fall 6-1 to Lebanon in girls soccer opener

Sweet Home’s girls soccer team fell 6-1 to Lebanon in their opening match Wednesday, Sept. 4, at home.

The Huskies got an early goal from Katie Virtue, off an assist by Auna Davis, but they could not match Lebanon’s speed and ball handling as the Warriors pulled away.

Coach Ramiro Santana noted he was missing his other top offensive player, Courtney Kent, who is recovering from a broken nose and was unable to play Wednesday. He said he hopes she can return this week.

“We had a bunch of injured players,” he said. “Six. We will get better.”

Sweet Home’s biggest problem, he said, is a lack of non-league games. The Huskies were to host Taft on Thursday, but that match has been cancelled because the Tigers don’t have enough players. There’s a possibility of a match with West Albany, but that wasn’t confirmed by press time.

“Every year we have this problem,” a clearly frustrated Santana said. “We don’t get enough pre-season games before we get to league.”
