Softball team topples Sisters, shuts out La Pine

Sweet Home 7, Sisters 5

The Huskies gave the Sisters Outlaws their second loss of the season in a 7-5 win on the road on April 3.

“We had a good win at Sisters,” said Coach Gary Barr. It turns out it was especially good since Sisters beat Elmira yesterday.”

That puts four teams at 2-1 in the league.

The Huskies got ahead early, scoring four runs in the first inning, another in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Then the Huskies had “one of those innings,” Barr said; and Sisters scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth but was unable to catch up.

The Huskies had some errors in those innings, five on the game, and Sisters capitalized.

“Emily (Marchbanks) continues to pitch well,” Barr said. She threw 12 strikeouts, giving up five hits and two walks.

At bat, Katie Virtue went 3-4 to lead the Huskies.

“(Megan) Graville has been on a tear,” Barr said. “She was 2-3 in this game.”

Marchbanks also hit 2-3.

Also hitting were Shantel Pitts, Mackenzie Cochran, Hailey Hummer and Caytlin Gillespie.

“That was probably the most hits in a single game,” Barr said. The offense and pitching were key to winning the game. The girls have been working on getting the bats going early, and they pulled it off this time.

The Huskies shutout La Pine in a nearly perfect five-inning no-hitter under the 10-run rule on the road on Friday.

The Huskies got things going with seven runs in the first inning and didn’t look back.

Marchbanks gave up a single walk and struck out 12 batters in five innings.

She had her best velocity and accuracy, one walk from a perfect game, Barr said. “She was approaching unhittable.”

She had to contend with a wet ball as the drizzle settled in during the third inning, Barr said, but that didn’t slow her down. All of that was after a three-hour bus ride.

“Virtue continued her hitting streak,” Barr said. “She was 2-3.”

Graville led the Huskies going 4-4 with a double. Hummer and Pitts both collected doubles. Sierra Thayer had a hit. Natalie Thorpe had her first base hit of the year.

The Huskies had no errors.

Looking forward, if the Huskies win everything this week, including Cottage Grove Monday, Junction City Wednesday and Elmira Friday, they’ll be in first place or tied with Sisters if Sisters wins everything it has scheduled. As of Monday afternoon, the Huskies were tied with Sisters, Elmira and Junction City with records of 2-1. The Huskies are 9-3 overall.

“I’m happy with how we continue to improve daily,” Barr said. The team is taking it one game at a time, and if it continues to improve this way, he thinks it’ll be a tough team with a lot of potential in playoffs.
