Facing some bigger-school competition in 5A Division Sprague and North Salem, Sweet Home’s track and field athletes continued to show marked improvement Wednesday, May 9, at Sprague.
The meet was non-scoring for the Huskies, but it gave them a chance to polish things up for the Sky-Em district championships this Thursday and Saturday, May 17 and 19, at home. It was also a change of pace from most of the other competitions this season, which tended to have concentrated league representation.
“It was a good tune-up for the district meet for us,” Coach Billy Snow said. “It’s nice to see different competition. We saw Elmira virtually every week this season. In our meets at Lebanon and Sprague, we got to see different schools. Variety is the spice of life.”
Annie Whitfield broke her own school record in the javelin, throwing 144-2, to lead the Husky girls.
Devyn Makin won the long jump (16-4) and Jade Corliss posted a 3-foot PR in the discus, throwing 87-11 to win that event. On the track, Nicole Rasmussen was the lone winner for the Huskies, running 11.52.20 to finish ahead of teammate Paige Sanders (11:56.30).
“Paige had a good 3000,” Snow said. “All of our distance kids had a good day, except for the 800 meters, for some reason.”
On the boys side, Nick Hall won the 300 hurdles (40.75), Jake Johnson won the discus (137-5), Ashton Stutzman won the high jump (5-8) and Scottie Stockman won the pole vault (11-6) with teammate Nick Mattson second at 9-6.
The boys 4×400 relay team also won, in 3:38.34.
The Sprague meet featured varsity athletes, as the junior varsity district meet was held Tuesday, May 8, at Cottage Grove.
Winners for Sweet Home were Karson Rodgers in the girls 100 (14.69) and Kyle Wodtli in the boys shot put (36-8), ahead of teammate Shawn Worthen, second with 35-11¼.
Wodtli also placed second in the javelin (124-10). McKenzie Curtis placed second in the pole vault (6-6) for the girls, Phoebe Olson was third in the girls long jump (12-3 ¾) and Joe Hefty was third in the boys triple jump (32-9).
Snow said he believes his team is in good shape for the district competition, which will begin at 2 p.m. with field events and 4 p.m. on the track on Thursday, and at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for students.
He said he expects La Pine to be the leader on the boys side and Sisters on the girls.
“They don’t have a lot, but what they have is very, very good,” he said of the Hawks. “Behind them are us and Cottage Grove, battling it out.”
La Pine’s Jeremy Derosiers has the top 200 time in the league – by half a second, the best long jump mark (22-0) and is a threat to win the 400 as well. The Hawks also have the top 300 hurdler in Colton George (40.59), though Sweet Home’s Hall could challenge him; and the top 4×100 relay team, led by Derosiers; the top shot putter, Travis Harrison (47-11), and two 14-foot pole vaulters in Eion Mock (14-10) and Dylan Seay (14-6), who lead the league.
On the girls side, Sisters looks to be a clear favorite, led by sophomore Zoe Falk, who has sizeable leads in the league in the 800 (2:20.51) and the 1500 (4:52.99) going into districts. She also has the second-longest long jump mark, 16-7¾. The Outlaws also have depth in both the 400, the 800 and the 100 hurdles, in which they have the league leader in senior Chelsea Reifshneider (16.18), who also leads in the 300 hurdles (47.91).
Sisters also leads the league in both relays. On the field, they have significant depth in the high jump, the pole vault and the long jump.
“Sisters is way ahead,” Snow said. “Behind them it’s pretty tightly packed.”
Husky boys who are league leaders going into the meet are Daniel Danforth in the 3000 (9:25.05) and Johnson in the discus (147-9). On the girls side, Rasmussen leads in the 3000 (11:08.02), Whitfield in the javelin (144-2) and Makin in the long jump (17-2½).
Sweet Home athletes have performed well in recent district meets and Snow said his crew is ready to go.
“We’ll rest them up this week, just work on finer details,” he said. “Being home will be nice. They get extra rest time. They know the facility in the field events. It’s always nice.”
