SH wrestlers win state freestyle, Greco titles

Tyler Schilling and Colton Schilling won state championships in both freestyle and Greco at the Oregon state tournament last weekend.

Justin Nicholson also won first in Greco, as did Ricky Yunke in the Novice division.

Five other Sweet Home wrestlers placed in the tournament.

“In a style like Greco it is impressive to see that we had four champions and five other placers,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “That speaks to how physical we are. I have seen more improvement over the past month in some guys than I think I have ever had.”

Tyler Schilling won his titles at 100 pounds and Colton Schilling wrestled at 126 pounds. Nicholson won his title at 113 pounds, and placed fourth in freestyle.

Other Junior division placewinners for Sweet Home were: Tyler Cowger, fourth in freestyle at 152 pounds; Chance Jucutan, fifth in Greco at 182; and Zach Gill, sixth in freestyle at 285.

In the Intermediate division, Kyle Watkins was fifth in freestyle at 55 pounds and Jackson Royer placed fourth in freestyle and fifth in Greco at 65 pounds.

In the Novice division, Yunke took second in freestyle in addition to his Greco win; Robert Watkins was second in Greco at 70 pounds; Travis Thorpe was third in both freestyle and Greco at 85 pounds; Justin Kurtz was fourth in freestyle and fifth in Greco at 90 pounds; and Damian Shocker was third in freestyle at 95 pounds.

In the Schoolboy division, Evan Feigum was fifth in Greco at 136 pounds.

Also wrestling, but not placing, were Tyler Fincher, Brayden Newport, Robbie Yunke, Scottie Stockman, Brian Sorenson, Anthony Hardee and Nick Dadey.

The previous weekend, Cowger was seventh in the 18-and-under 138-pound division at the Reno World of Wrestling Championships. Newport was 1-2 at the tournament and Travis Thorpe finished 2-2.

“We will take a break now for a while,” Steve Thorpe said. “I am locking the doors so we not only physically heal but get some mental rest as well. This has been an incredible spring of wrestling.”

He said that after a break, his wrestlers will get back to work, preparing for the regionals in Pocatello, the nationals in Fargo, N.D. and a trip to South Africa for the Schillings, Cowger and Wade Paulus.

“Guys have worked hard and have done those extra things that will pay off for them next year,” Thorpe said. “I could not do what I do and give this kind of time commitment if it were not for these guys.”

On Thursday, April 19, Sweet Home hosted a New Zealand team in front of some 500 spectators in the Main Gym.

“That was a fun time,” Thorpe said. The visitors performed a haka war dance that was “really cool,” he said.

The Huskies won most of their matches and former Huskies and current coaches Tomas Rosa and Kyle Temple both won their matches against a New Zealand coach who placed second in the Oceanic Tournament last year.

“Their level of wrestling was not like ours,” Thorpe said. “They were impressed with our facilities, the easy access, the number of kids doing it. That made it a neat cultural event.”

The visitors, who arrived from two weeks in the Midwest, told Thorpe their stay in Sweet Home was their favorite stop.

“The kids went to school and we went to the (spot)light, we had a crowd and we had the music playing,” he said. “We had a show. It was good for wrestling and good for us.”
