Girls basketball: Sweet Home notches overtime Senior Night win over North Marion

Despite a tough season in the Oregon West Conference, Sweet Home’s girls basketball team went out in style last week with an overtime win on senior night against North Marion.

The 43-42 victory on Feb. 16 brought Sweet Home its only league win of the season.

After the Huskies (5-18) stopped the visitors from scoring on one final possession in regulation to force overtime, senior Brooke Burke was fouled while shooting a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in OT and Sweet Home trailing by two.

The Husky hoop star, who broke the 1,000 point career scoring threshold earlier this season, made all three free throws to give her team the dramatic victory. A steal in the waning seconds by fellow senior Meeja Bitter helped to seal the deal.

“Brooke doesn’t normally miss free throws, so I didn’t expect her to miss,” Sweet Home Head Coach Michelle Knight said.

“But when she made them all, it was a great moment for her, because those were intense moments. It was just a culmination of all the work that she’s put in over the years. It was a great senior night moment, for sure.”

Both teams struggled with shooting in the game. Sweet Home shot just 24.4% from the field, while North Marion (5-18) shot 20.0%. Sweet Home turned the ball over 18 times while forcing 11.

Burke led Sweet Home in scoring with 25 points on 6-24 shooting. Bitter and freshman Addy Vannice each had seven points.

In its final game of the season on Feb. 20, Sweet Home lost at Stayton (13-10) by a score of 49-34.
