Soccer season ends for Sweet Home girls with pair of losses

Sweet Home girls soccer wrapped up their season with a handful of tough league contests. They lost on the road at Stayton 2-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and then fell 4-2 to Cascade at home on Saturday.

Their season finale was on the road at Newport on Oct. 25, where they lost 4-0.

Stayton, 3-8-2 on the season as of Oct. 25, tied Sweet Home 0-0 earlier in the season. This time around, the Eagles scored one goal in the first half and one in the second and held the Huskies’ offense scoreless, securing the 2-0 victory.

“We had a lack of shooting,” said Head Coach Ramiro Santana. “If we would have shot more, we might have had more success. We wanted to pass the ball instead.”

Against Cascade, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead, up 2-0 at halftime. In the second half, Sweet Home got on the board when senior defender Meagan Baham scored on a free kick from outside of the box.

But Cascade tacked on two more goals, stretching their lead to 4-1. Senior forward Chloe Fairchild’s shot from the sideline found the back of the net soon after, but the effort wasn’t enough as Sweet Home lost 4-2.

“We got better as the game went on,” said Santana. “In the second half we looked like a totally different team. Our defense was playing really well, and we did quite a bit of shooting. It was a pretty exciting game.”

At Newport, conditions were windy and wet. Santana said his team played “really well” the first 25 minutes, after which the girls “got a little tired.” Only down 1-0 at halftime, the Huskies let up three goals in the second on the way to the 4-0 defeat.

“We didn’t have a whole lot of shooting. We played more defensively,” Santana said of the game.

Sweet Home graduates eight seniors. They finished the season 1-12-1, and 0-11-1 in league play.
