Experience was a deciding factor for the girls soccer team in a round-robin jamboree against South Albany and Central Saturday, Aug. 26, as Sweet Home’s veterans held their own against two 5A Division teams.
Coach Ramiro Santana said a number of his junior varsity players had family obligations and were not present, which forced him to cancel Sweet Home’s participation in the JV jamboree and put his JV players on the field with his varsity team.
Against Central, the Huskies lost 1-0 on a late goal, after Santana put in less experienced players.
“That’s why they scored,” he said. “Otherwise, it probably would have been 0-0.”
In a match-up against South Albany, the Huskies lost 2-0, but again, Santana said, the scores came with “six or seven” JV players on the field.
“With all the varsity players out there, neither team scored,” he said.
The varsity team showed speed on the field, Santana said.
“We could have scored four or five goals, but we kicked the ball directly to the goalie or we didn’t shoot right.”
Weather permitting, the Sweet Home girls were scheduled to open Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 29, in an endowment game against South Umpqua at 4 p.m. at Husky Field, with the boys playing at 6:30 p.m.
