The Huskies girls varsity team held Elmira to zero goals on the road Thursday, but they didn’t score either, leaving the two teams with a tie on their records.
Neither team was able to score in two 10-minute overtime halves. The Huskies tied Cottage Grove 1-1 two days earlier at home.
“We had shots,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “Haley (Kent), our goalie, had amazing stuff.”
She blocked 15 to 20 shots, and the game “was just back and forth, back and forth,” Santana said. On the other end of the field, Natalie Currey, Ashley Wickline and Katy Virtue had four or five shots each, with a couple of really good shots.
“Anyone who would’ve scored the ball would’ve won the game,” Santana said. “I think it could’ve been either way it so even.”
In overtime, the Huskies were a bit more energetic than the Falcons, Santana said. They were probably conditioned better and were able to put more shots on goal, but nothing went in.
Against Cottage Grove, Currey scored on a long shot.
“She took it from the outside of the goal area, and it just happened to slide right through the goalie’s hands,” Santana said. That was about 23 minutes into the game. “It was an amazing long shot.”
The Lions answered about a minute and a half into the second half on a shot from the side over Kent’s head.
“We had opportunities to beat Cottage Grove,” Santana said. “We had our chances. We could’ve done it easily.”
That was a win he thought would be tough, he said.
The referee did not allow the game to go to overtime, Santana said. After the game, he verified that a tie during regulation time requires one overtime of two 10-minute halves.
“The girls are starting to play better,” Santana said. “We finally started to figure out what everybody’s positions are. These girls are very competitive. They’re looking good.”
The defense is working better, and the forwards are passing better, creating chances for themselves, he said. He thinks they’ll get even better as they get some games in.
The Huskies were scheduled to host Junction City Tuesday and travel to Sisters on Thursday.
