In a rematch at Regis Friday, roles were reversed from the previous week in Sweet Home as Regis scored seven late-game runs to defeat the Huskies 9-5 in baseball.
It was a role reversal,” said Coach Matt Matuszak. “And we didn’t get the job done in the end.”
The Huskies’ pitching wasn’t hitting the right spots, he said, and a after a two-run homerun, it kind of fell apart against a tough opponent.
With two losses in a tournament Monday, 5-4 to Gladstone and 12-8 against North Bend, the Huskies are 4-4.
It’s early,” Matuszak said. “We’re young, and we’re still trying to recover from some injuries. We’re hiting the ball really well.”
To open things against Regis, Austin Rice reached base on a walk, advancing to third on a single by Brandon Marquez. He scored the Huskies first run on a throw in the first inning. Regis tied the game in the bottom of the second on an error.
In the top of the third, the Huskies held a 3-1 lead when Rice scored again on a fly out at left field from Colton Holly. Marquez advanced to third and scored on a single from J.T. Weld. Regis scored again in the bottom of the fourth, and the Huskies added two more runs in the top of the fifth to keep a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Regis grounded out to Hunter Jutte at first, and Marquez struck out the second Regis batter. Then Regis put together a string of seven runs to win the game, advancing and scoring the team’s first runner on a single and three passed balls.
At bat, the Huskies collected 10 hits. Holly led hitting, going 3-4. Marqez and Justin Rice went 2-4. A. Rice went 1-4. Weld and Jutte each went 1-3. Weld had two RBIs, and Jutte had one. A. Rice scored two runs, while Marquez, Nate Melcher and Weld each scored one.
