Softball team takes second in conference

The Huskies edged out Junction City 2-0 on the road Thursday in softball to take lock up second place in league play last week and then shut out La Pine 13-0 in fiving innings on the road.

The Huskies are 6-3 overall and 5-1 in league, trailing Elmira, 6-0, and leading Junction City, 4-2.

The Huskies were scheduled to host Elmira on Tuesday. They travel to Sisters on Friday and Cottage Grove on Tuesday.

The Huskies put together two runs in the fourth to get the win over Junction City.

“It’s very big standings-wise,” said Coach Casey Humphrey. “Now we’re second place by ourselves, knocking on the heels of Elmira, which is nice.”

To win, Megan Graville led off with a base hit in the fourth. McKenzie Cochran moved her on a sac bunt, and Shantel Pitts singled, batting in Graville.

Pitts advanced to second on an error and third on a wild pitch. Megan Rubidoux knocked her in on a sac fly.

Again, the Huskies had people in scoring positions throughout the game, Humphrey said, but the team never got the big hit. This time, the Huskies snuck through a couple of runs to seal the win.

Emily Marchbanks pitched the game, striking out six, walking no one and giving up three hits.

Junction City’s Devorak, gave up two runs, eight hits and two walks, while striking out three.

At bat, Katie Virtue went 2-3; Emili Riggs, 1-3; Graville, one hit and two runs; Pitts, 1-3, with a run and RBI; Rubidoux, 2-2 with an RBI; and Hailey Hummer, 1-3 .

The Huskies started out slow but poured on the offense in the fourth and fifth, scoring six and seven runs respectively, defeating La Pine by the 10-run rule in the fifth inning.

“We had a slow start and got going finally in the fourth and fifth innings,” Humphrey said, but defense has been solid for the past three games.

The Huskies have given up only a single run in the past three games, he said, and the Huskies are excited to face Elmira this week.

Graville pitched the game, striking out eight batters and giving up three hits, with no walks.

Parrish was the losing pitcher, striking out one and walking seven.

At bat, Hummer went 2-2; Sarah Wyatt, 1-3; Virtue, 1-4; Graville, 2-3; Cochran 1-4; and Sierra Thayer, 1-1.
