Huskies lose to Creswell 63-50 in game of inches

After digging a deep deficit, the Huskies climbed back into the game against a taller Creswell team but weren’t able to stop a fourth-quarter rally and lost 63-50 in the opening of boys basketball Friday.

“We started off somewhat slowly,” Coach Kostanty Knurowski said. Creswell jumped out to a 25-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Huskies got back into the game in the second quarter and closed their deficit to 35-27 by halftime and 47-46 by the end of the third.

“We never came back and took the lead,” Knurowski said. “We spent a lot of the game coming from that deficit.”

Creswell came out with renewed intensity and control in the fourth, holding the Huskies to just four points on the quarter.

“We weren’t able to sustain the momentum,” Knurowski said.

The Huskies looked like it was their first game, and Creswell was a good team, he said. “I thought the kids did a nice job at least giving us a chance. We did have some chances. Our execution looked like a first game.”

Sometimes the Huskies may have been a little too energetic, to overzealous, picking up extra fouls, he said.

Creswell with four starters taller than 6 feet, while the Huskies have one player over 6 feet, Knurowski said. The Huskies must find a way to be successful being a small team.

The team had some great energy, and the four top scoring players exemplified it, Tony Ramirez with 14, Jeremy White with 10, Brice Vandenberg with nine and Trevor Bulman-Jutte with eight.

The other guys played well also, Knurowski said, “but those four stood out to me.”
