The summer high school softball team defeated the Eugene Lightning 5-3 and Yreka, Calif., 5-1, Saturday afternoon on the road.
A few weeks ago, the Lightning won the 16U state tournament, in which the Huskies didn’t place, said Coach Steve Hummer. The Huskies hadn’t played for a couple of weeks since then, but they came back and had some timely hits.
Megan Graville threw in the game, and Emily Marchbanks hit a grand slam.
Against Yreka, “Emily Marchbanks pitched well and did a good job,” Hummer said. She hit a double with bases loaded to score a couple of runs.
“We played pretty well, and we had a pretty good weekend,” Hummer said.
Overall, 20 Huskies played and saw a lot of improvement from start to finish this summer, Hummer said. He expects good things when the Huskies reconvene for the spring season next year.
“We put all our parts together,” Hummer said. “Next spring, we’re going to be a contender again.”
The second 16U American Softball Association team finished its season the weekend of July 9, placing second in the 16-B state tournament with a 2-2 tournament record.
