Alex Hawk named most valuable girls soccer player

Alex Hawk was named the girls soccer team’s Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year.

Sarah Nelson and Jessica Snow were named Best Offensive Players. Megan Rubidoux received the Hustle Award, and Kristen Tolle was named Rookie of the Year.

Jazmine Morris was named Most Improved Player.

Nelson, Snow and Hawk all received all-league honorable mention.

Receiving their first letters in soccer were freshmen Jasmin Yoder, Tolle, Rubidoux, Christina Ulmer, Hanna Curry, Jessika Stewart and Rilee Links and sophomore Mandy Binks.

Second-year letters went to sophomores Shelbey Gillespie, Erin Rose, Kaitlin Keenon and Jazmine Morris.

Receiving third-year letters were juniors Hawk, Brianna Wirth, Nelson, Snow, Kelsi Walker, Rochelle Zamacona, Julie Bosso and Ruth Hernandez.

Seniors Leanna Blankenship, Kathy Wilson and Faith Helfrich earned their fourth letters.

The team finished the season with two ties and a win, which was a comeback from 0-2 to a 3-2 victory.

The Huskies competed well this year compared to last, Coach Ramiro Santana said. Last year, the team was focused on basics.

“This year was much different,” he said. “This year was easier on me. They were more advanced.”

The Huskies improved their passing, communication and ball control, he said, but they still need work in all those areas, and he needs to get some speed into the defense, probably the biggest issue for the team this year.

The team collectively tripled its goals this year, with 12. Nelson and Snow scored three each. Stewart and Tolle scored two each, and Rubidoux and Zamacona each scored a goal.

“Talentwise, we are just amazing,” he said. The team lost m any games by a single goal. The team was competitive. The team is young, returning all but three players, and he is looking forward to bringing that experience back to the field next year.
