Hopelessly Devoted to Blooms

For its third year in a row, the Lebanon Garden Club hosted flower design classes ahead of the city’s Strawberry Festival in an effort to encourage increased participation in the annual Standard Flower Show.

Above, club member Renata Stenko, at left, leads a class for teacup design, one of the many categories in the flower show’s design division.

Going with the festival’s annual theme, “Strawberry Nights,” a nod to the movie “Grease,” flower design category titles include Rock Around the Clock, Cruisin’ Main Street, Soda Fountain, Crew Cut, Surfin’ USA, Twist and Shout, and more.

Category titles suggest what a design might depict, but technically the interpretation of a design title is mostly subjective. In addition to the design division, the flower show includes a horticultural division and special exhibit. This year, the flower show will be held at Santiam Place, 139 S Main St.

Resources today for strength tomorrow

The Sources of Strength Wellness Fair, organized through Lebanon Community School District in partnership with several other organizations, held its fifth annual event on Wednesday, May 27, at Pioneer Elementary School.

At left, booths providing information pertaining to a variety of health-related areas fill the grassy area at the school.

The cornerstone of the fair is the Sources of Strength model, focusing on building resiliency through eight factors: mental health, generosity, family support, mentors, physical health, spirituality and healthy activities.

RV fire one of multiple calls for LFD Sunday

At right, a Lebanon firefighter battles a fire that destroyed an RV in Lacomb Sunday, May 31. It was part of a busy day for LFD, which had just responded to a field fire, also in Lacomb.

While they were responding to the RV fire, units were dispatched to a cardiac arrest emergency. Then, while returning to the district, E31 was dispatched to extinguish a dumpster fire at Cascade Ridge Apartments that was threatening nearby trees. During these incidents, Lebanon Community Hospital also requested two emergency transfers, temporarily placing both medic units out of district. According to LFD, volunteers assisted with both the fires and the emergency responses, as staff was stretched thin. LFD reminds east Linn County residents that burn season ended at 7 p.m. Sunday.  No more burning.
