Under a blanket of clear blue sky and wrapped in warmth from the sun, veteran organizations gathered at Gilliland Cemetery on Monday, May 27, to observe Memorial Day. During the service, Craig Frangente read the proclamation made in 1868 to inaugurate Memorial Day, Brittany Vaughan recited the poem “In Flanders Fields” on behalf of her mother, Jan Hufford, who was unable to attend, and David Brock played “Flowers of the Forest” on the bagpipes on behalf of Richard Knight, who recently passed away.
VFW Post 3437 Chaplain Howard Ruby said Memorial Day “has to do with remembering our freedoms and what it costs to keep them.”
