Mallard Creek
The Sweet Home boys golf team kicked off its 2011 season Tuesday, March 15, with a fourth-place finish in a five-way home match on a sopping-wet Mallard Creek course.
It wasn’t “a very good start” for the Huskies, Coach Tom Horn said.
“We just gave away too many strokes,” he said.
Junction City showed why it will be the team to beat in the Sky-Em League this year, shooting 327 to take the team victory. Central was second (369), followed by Lebanon (377), Sweet Home (407) and Toledo (413).
Mike Fontenot led the Huskies with a 90, good for fifth overall, followed by Roman Kinney (95), Jason Rice (103), Zack Miller (109), Cody Daniels (111) and Blake Martin (112).
Crooked River Ranch
Things were better for Sweet Home, score-wise, on Wednesday, March 16, at Crooked River Ranch near Terrebonne.
Fontenot shot an 85 in a seven-way match with schools from Central Oregon and the Huskies scored a 359 as a team to take fifth.
“Mike has solidified his grasp on No. 1 and Roman Kinney is playing a solid two,” Horn said. Kinney shot a 98, ahead of Cody Daniels (100), Jason Rice (106) and Zack Miller (108).
Summit won the match with a 307, followed by Crook County (315), Bend (327), Sisters (348), the Huskies (359), Madras (394) and Mountain View (402).
“The kids are showing that they are capable of playing well – they need to stop throwing a high number in there, every nine holes,” Horn said. “They need to become much more consistent.”
Sweet Home plays Friday, March 25, at Bandon Crossing.
