Allison Wickline was named Most Valuable Player for the girls soccer team at their awards banquet Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Wickline, a junior, locked down the defensive end of the field for the Huskies, who were one of the youngest teams in the Sky-Em Conference this year, with four seniors on their roster along with 21 underclassmen.
Sweet Home finished 2-8 in league and 3-11 overall this season, good for fifth in the league.
Wickline was also named Best Defender, and her twin sister Ashley was awarded Best Forward for scoring 11 goals.
“I think every coach knows who those two girls are,” Coach Ramiro Santana told the crowd at the banquet.
Best Midfielder went to Barbara Raphaelli, an exchange student from Brazil.
“She doesn’t have a lot of speed but she has excellent ballhandling skills – dribbling and passing,” Santana said. “As a midfielder, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a lot of speed if you know how to handle the ball.”
The Hustle Award winner was junior Maddee Hawken, who was a team leader throughout the season, playing while sick several times, Santana said.
“Maddee has come a long way,” he said. “She was sick when we played Sutherlin, but without her we wouldn’t have won the game. She got the other players motivated.”
Coaches Awards went to sophomore Kenzi Adams and freshman goalie Haile. y Nicholson.
Santana said Adams improved immensely from last year to this season, and Nicholson played beyond her years in goal, stopping 111 shots, including two of five penalty kicks.
Rookie of the Year was freshman Kendyl Stutzman.
“We had her everywhere except goalie and she could have done that too,” Santana said. “She covered big holes even though she’s little. She’s not afraid to bump heads. No excuses, no nothing.”
No fourth-year letters were awarded this year.
Third-year letters went to seniors Lily Barton, Brenna Boccardo and Aspen Szubart, and juniors Sarah Dunkley, Hawken, Lilly Parker, and Allison and Ashley Wickline.
Second-year letter winners were juniors Isabelle Stratman and Amber Doles, and sophomores Adams, Hannah Jewett, Kaylee Lewis and Chloe Newport.
First year-letters went to Raphaelli and freshmen Cora McKee, Hailey Nicholson, Stutzman, Jessilyn Thomas and Mila Weld.
Junior varsity certificate recipients were Makenna Ashton, Carissa Burge, Adrionna Davis, Chelsea Nicholson and Emiliea Prentiss.
