Alvin Glen “Mike” McLain, 88, of Corvallis died at the home he shared with his daughter and son-in-law in Corvallis on Sept. 18, 2007.
He was born April 15, 1919 in Richmond, Calif., and moved to Holley in 1928. He graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1937 where he was student body president and a multi-sport athlete.
He helped organize reunions of that class every year until their last 65th reunion in 2002.
He graduated from the Oregon state University School of Pharmacy in 1941 and served
in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific during World War II.
He continued to have contact with his fellow corpsmen and organized a final reunion for them 50 years after their service to our country.
He married his wife, Ann, in 1945.
After returning from the service he was employed as a pharmacist in Grants Pass from 1946 to 1953. He then moved to Roseburg and operated his own pharmacy until 1967 when he moved to Salem. He was appointed to the Board of Pharmacy by Governor Mark Hatfield in 1960 and served as the board’s executive director until 1976. He also served on the Oregon State Board of Health for four years. He was a member of the Oregon Pharmacist Association and was its president in 1958. He was the recipient of the Hygeia award for outstanding community service to pharmacy Oregon in 1962. He was active in many pharmacy organizations and was the president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy in 1968.
He also served as a member of the Grants Pass School Board, a district governor of the Lions Club, a member of the Oregon State University Foundation, and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Salem where he served on many committees.
Other interests included fishing, traveling, sports( particularly baseball),watching the wildlife from his chair, and his cats.
His wife Ann had Alzheimer’s disease for 22 years and he was her caregiver as well as an advocate and volunteer of memory loss causes. At the time of his death he was a valued board member for the nonprofit organization, Memory Loss Support Organization.
He is survived by his daughter, Glenda and son-in-law Dick Green;his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Teresa McLain; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; his brother, Howard McLain; and sister, Betty Lewis.
A memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at the Calvary Bapist Church in Salem. Donations may be made in his memory to the Memory Loss Support Organization, 37032 Moss Rock Dr., Corvallis, OR 97330.
