Meals on Wheels weekly menu
Meals on Wheels offers take-out lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Jan. 27, is macaroni and cheese or beef enchilada bake, Italian vegetable blend, cucumber and red onion salad, onion roll and golden fruit cup.
The menu on Monday, Jan. 30. is Mexican pasta bake or breaded fish with Tartar sauce, chuckwagon corn, spinach romaine salad, white dinner roll and lemon pudding.
The menu on Tuesday, Jan. 31, is chicken rice bake or pork and noodles, green beans, garden vegetable salad, multigrain roll and applesauce streusel.

Square dance fest at Expo Center
The Oregon Mid-Winter Square and Round Dance Festival will be held Friday through Sunday, Jan. 27-29, at the Linn County Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road E.
This year’s theme is “The Wonderful World of Dance.” Square dance callers will be Steve Edlund and Justin Russel. Deb and Tim Vogt will cue round dances. Shane Gruber will teach clogging.
The event includes plenty of dancing, shopping, workshops and fellowship. Cost is $60 per adult for the full festival; youth dancers are $35. Spectators are welcome to come watch at no charge.

Women’s Bible study starting
Mid-Valley Women of Christ will launch a community-wide Bible study, “Encountering God,” led by Kelly Minter, starting the week of Jan. 30.
Classes will be hosted by 17 churches across the Willamette Valley, including Brownsville, Crawfordsville, Lebanon and Sweet Home. This study marks the 31st Bible study coordinated and marketed by Mid-Valley Women of Christ.
“Encountering God” will be a six-week Bible study that unpacks the biblical foundation for sacred habits and approachable ways to practice disciplines such as prayer, study, worship, rest, simplicity, generosity, celebration, and many more. Instead of being just one more thing on a to-do list, participants may find that these faith habits can create more margin in their lives – providing peace and rest as you walk closer with Jesus.
The free interdenominational classes are open to women of all faiths, with participant study guides available at host churches for a nominal fee. Classes also offer hospitality, small group discussions, and prayer. Childcare is available at select locations. Classes will be held at various times and locations throughout the week to accommodate different schedules.
In Sweet Home, classes will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at Sweet Home Evangelical Church Ministry Center, 1035 14th Ave., and from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at Sweet Home Church of the Nazarene, 415 Holley Road.
In Crawfordsville, classes will held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at Crawfordsville Calvary Chapel, 38353 Glass St.

Quilt fest next week at Expo
The Willamette Valley Quilt Festival will be held Tuesday, Jan. 31, and Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road E, Albany.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event includes classes, a gallery of quilt art, vendors, a quilt contest and more.

Oregon Veterans Home job fair
Oregon Veterans Home will host a job fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the residential home, 500 N. 5th St. in Lebanon.
OVHL is offering a new wage scale for all employees and a shift differential of $2 per hour for anyone who works between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The facility has openings for licensed nurses, certified medical assistants, certified nursing assistants and nursing assistants. It also offers a free CNA class.

Grants available for local culture
The Linn County Cultural Coalition is accepting proposals for grants to fund projects involving the arts, the humanities, and heritage activities in Linn County.
The deadline for completed grant applications is Feb. 3. The Coalition board will review the applications and decide on awards within a few weeks of that date.
The LCCC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization affiliated with the Oregon State Cultural Trust, a statewide entity established to promote and strengthen cultural activities in Oregon. Through local coalitions such as Linn County’s, the Trust distributes funding to all 36 Oregon counties and nine federally recognized tribes.
Grants typically range between $250 and $2,500. Applicants may be awarded less than the full amount requested.
The grants are available to nonprofit organizations with tax-exempt status. An organization or individual sponsored by a qualifying nonprofit may also apply. Full guidelines for applying are

Historian to talk on cemeteries
The Lebanon Genealogical Society will meet at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Lebanon Public Library community room, 55 Academy St.
Gary Timms will deliver a talk on the small cemeteries in Linn County. A short business meeting will follow Timms’ presentation. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
Members of the public are also welcome to make use of the genealogy room, where volunteers are available to help people trace their ancestors.
Rodeo Feb. 4 at fairgrounds

Hell on Hooves Rough Stock Rodeo will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road E.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event includes bull riding, bareback broncs, barrel racing and more by competitors in the Hell on Hooves Tour.
Tickets are $15 presale, $20 at the door. Kids under 5 are free.
Woodlands group tree sale Feb. 4
The Linn County Chapter of the Oregon Small Woodlands Association will hold its Annual Seedling Sale from 8 a.m. to noon (or while supplies last) Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center’s Santiam Building, 3700 Knox Butte Road in Albany.
Seedlings come directly from local nurseries and will be bare-root, plugs or crowns.
Pre-orders are recommended; information is available at LinnCountySWA.com, but same-day buyers will be served as long as stock is available. Pre-ordered seedlings will be packaged and ready for pick-up at the sale. Seedling (deer) protector tubes will be available for purchase on sale day.
All pre-orders must be submitted by Jan. 21.
A table at the sale will provide information about plants available, including origin, height, sun and soil preference, bird and wildlife value, and more.

Local worship event in Sweet Home
A Community Worship and Prayer event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Sweet Home New Life in Christ Fellowship, 1266 44th Ave.
The community is welcome. The event is sponsored by ONE Sweet Home, a group of local churches working together “in unity, sharing the love of Jesus Christ through outreach, prayer and service, becoming a network to meet the needs of our community.”

‘Insights Into Gardening’
Learn all about growing your own at “Insights Into Gardening,” a free day of classes on edibles, ornamentals and general garden topics held Saturday, Feb. 11, at LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th St. on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis.
Hosted by OSU Master Gardeners, the event is intended for both new and experienced gardeners interested in garden planning and creation, and topics ranging from healthy soils and dealing with climate impacts and diseases to food preservation and attracting friendly bugs.

Chapel to hold Valentine’s Day gala
Community Chapel’s youth group is hosting a Valentine’s Day Gala at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 42250 Ames Creek Road.
Participants will feast on chicken fettuccini alfredo, spaghetti with meat sauce, salad and breadsticks. A silent auction will be held, as well as a “Dessert Dash” auction in which participants can bid on their favorite dessert to end the evening.
Tickets are $20 each, or a table of eight can be hosted for $150.
Childcare will be available. Donations to that end are appreciated.
Proceeds benefit a planned trip to Romania by Chapel youth.

Church to host potato bake
Fir Lawn Lutheran Church will host a Potato Bake from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at 109 W. Holley Road.
Cost per person is $5. Proceeds benefit SHEM. On the menu are “loaded” baked potatoes with with condiments.

Sign up for Samaritan scholarship program
The Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applications for its scholarship program.
The Auxiliary allocates $5,000 to fund scholarships every year and residents of east Linn County are invited to apply. To qualify, applicants must live in Brownsville, Cascadia, Crabtree, Crawfordsville, Foster, Halsey, Lacomb, Lebanon, Scio, Shedd, Sweet Home or Waterloo.
Applicants must be attending college and have completed at least one term in an accepted medical program.
To apply, submit a packet including the following information:
An official transcript including fall term 2022 grades.
A one to two-page typed statement discussing why you are pursuing a degree in a health field and what your goals are.
Explain any special circumstances, which will help the scholarship committee make a fair evaluation (optional).
A letter of recommendation signed and dated.
Mail completed applications to: Scholarship Chair / Auxiliary Volunteer Services Office, P.O. Box 739, Lebanon, OR 97355.
Completed applications, including transcripts, must be received by the Lebanon Community Hospital volunteer office no later than 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22.
Late or incomplete applications or transcripts will not be considered. Electronic transcripts must be sealed and received directly from the institution. Scholarship recipients will be announced by Tuesday, March 14.

Noms sought for DIstinguished Service Awards
Nominations for Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce’s Distinguished Service Awards are being accepted through Friday, Feb. 24.
Awards will be presented at the chamber’s awards banquet, which will be a vintage picnic dinner this year, held at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at the Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club.
Nomination criteria are as follows:
— Distinguished Service Award: Must be 55 years of age or over with a minimum of 5 years of community service in recent or previous years. Areas of consideration include participation in clubs and organizations, community service, youth involvement, and church activities.
— First Citizen: Must be over 41 years of age and have served the community for 5 years or more. Areas to be judged include clubs, organizations, community service, youth involvement, and church participation.
— Junior First Citizen: Must be under 41 years old and who has served the community for a minimum of five years with a variety of activities in school, community, church, etc.
— Organization of the Year: Selected based on local organization’s ability to have significant community impact, which may include organizational success (based on mission statement), and measurable community impact as a result of organization’s services and community involvement. The organization must have been active in the community for a minimum of five years.
— Business of the Year: Selection is based on active business success, employment/staff opportunity, long-term community impact, and community involvement. Businesses must have been involved in the community for a minimum of five years.
— Curb Appeal Award: Recognition is based on exterior appearance. Criteria is not restricted to Main/Long streets.
