Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels offers take-out lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, May 20, is a chicken- or tuna-salad half-sandwich, green split-pea soup, confetti coleslaw, whole wheat bread and spiced apples.

The menu on Monday, May 23, is a baked beef rigatoni or turkey divan bake, winter-blend vegetables, a three-bean salad, a white dinner roll and a lime whip.

The menu on Tuesday, May 24, is a chicken Alfredo pasta bake or a cheese and green chili bake, dilled carrots, tossed salad, a cornmeal roll and butterscotch pudding.

Low Vision Group discusses disasters

The Mid Valley Low Vision Group will host a discussion on “What to Do in Case of a Disaster” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Speaker Angela Barnhurst, who herself has limited vision and uses a seeing-eye dog, will talk about her established disaster readiness program tailored for the disabled and visually challenged. She came up with the idea after attending a presentation on standard disaster preparation.

All meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Tickets available for county fair

Reserved seating tickets are now available for main stage entertainment at the Linn County Fair, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, July 14-16, at the Linn County Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road E, Albany.

Fair hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

This year’s headliners include Sara Evans on July 14, Five for Fighting on July 15 and Sawyer Brown on July 16. All performances begin at 8:30 p.m.

General seating is free with daily admission ($7 general, $5 seniors over 60 and free for children 12 and under), but reserved seats are $22-$30. Daily parking is $5.

Three-day passes are $21 general, $15 for seniors and FFA/4-H members and $15 for parking. A family fun pack for the carnival is $120, which is good for any single day of the fair and includes four general admission tickets and four all-day carnival wristbands. A Pick-Your-Day Fun Pack, which includes one of each item, is available for $35. An all-day carnival wristband is available for $32 by Sunday, July 10.

Woodlands group offers scholarships

The Linn County Small Woodlands Association is offering $2,000 scholarships to students graduating from Linn County high schools who plan to study forestry or forestry-related natural resources.

The scholarships are open to students who plan to attend an Oregon college or in a dual-enrollment program (such as LBCC-OSU and LCC-UO). The scholarships are renewable at $1,000 to $2,000 rates, depending on the success of the LCSWA’s annual winter seedling sales.

Academic achievements, honors and awards, school activities and community engagement will be considered.

Application forms, which must be postmarked or e-mailed by May 31, are available at Linn County’s high schools and from LCSWA scholarship chair Katie Kohl at [email protected].

Coming up at the Majestic Theatre

The Majestic Theatre’s production of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical” continues through Sunday, May 22, and the Majestic Readers’ Theatre Company launches “Queen” Saturday, May 21, at the theater, 115 SW Second St., Corvallis.

Showtimes for “Matilda” are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22. The Tony Award-winning masterpiece from England’s Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the work of author Roald Dahl, tells the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.

Showtimes for “Queen” are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22. Written by Indian American playwright Madhuri Shekar and directed by Sravya Tadepalli, “Queen” follows two PhD candidates, mathematician Sanam Shah and biologist Ariel Spiegel, as they prepare to publish a career-defining paper on the worldwide disappearance of bees. The play is presented as part of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Also, open auditions will be held for the Majestic’s upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s “Wars of the Roses” at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, May 23-24, with callbacks scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25.

Auditions will take place at the theater, although video auditions will also be accepted.

Gardening classes offered in Lebanon

Free gardening classes will be offered on second Tuesdays through Oct. 11 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.

Sessions will be held at 10 a.m., beginning with a question-and-answer period followed by short lectures on gardening topics, as outlined below.

— June 14: “Organic Nutrients/Companion Planting.”

— July 12: “Planting a Winter Garden in July.”

— Aug. 9: “When to Harvest.”

— Sept. 13: “Cover Crops for Your Garden.”

— Oct. 11: “Planting/Harvesting Garlic, Onions and Shallots.”

Carnival, auction coming May 21

Oak Heights Elementary School is hosting its annual spring carnival and silent auction from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the gymnasium on its campus, 605 Elm St., Sweet Home.

The event features a bounce house, obstacle course, face-painting, carnival games, prizes and raffle baskets. Carnival fare include hot dogs, popcorn, Casa de Reyes’ street tacos and cotton candy.
