Basketball: Girls struggle against Madras, Crook County

Sweet Home girls basketball was unable to find the win column last week, falling to Madras 54-40 and Crook County 51-28 in two road games.

The losses wrapped up Sweet Home’s non-league portion of the season and dropped the Huskies’ record to 4-9.

Sweet Home was down 29-17 at halftime against the White Buffalo (7-6), a hole too big for the Huskies to climb out of in the second half.

The White Buffaloes outshot Sweet Home 35.6% to 32.4% in the game. The Huskies turned the ball over 17 times, while forcing just 10.

Senior Brooke Burke scored 27 points for Sweet Home on 8-24 shooting. Freshman Addy Vannice scored six for the Huskies on 3-7 shooting, while sophomore Kaylynn Mamac added four points, all coming from the charity stripe.

Against Crook County, Sweet Home got down 27-7 by halftime. The 21 points the Huskies scored in the second half were not enough to trim the deficit.

The Cowgirls outshot the Huskies from the field 35.8% to 34.8%, even as Sweet Home went a perfect 3-3 from three-point territory. Sweet Home lost the turnover battle handily, giving the ball away 24 times while only forcing five.

Burke again led the Huskies in scoring by a wide margin, getting 21 points on 6-10 shooting. Mamac pitched in for four on 1-3 shooting, while freshman Aubrey Newberry had three points on 1-2 shooting.

The Huskies start Oregon West Conference play this week by traveling to Cascade (4-6) for a 5:30 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 20.
